could become uninhabitable in less than five years in wake of 2014 conflict
and ongoing de-development, according to new UNCTAD report

UNCTAD’s
report on assistance to the Palestinian people states that Gaza could
become uninhabitable by 2020 if current economic trends persist. In addition to
eight years of economic blockade, in the past six years, Gaza has endured three
military operations that have shattered its ability to export and produce for
the domestic market, ravaged its already debilitated infrastructure, left no
time for reconstruction and economic recovery, and accelerated the
de-development of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, a process by which
development is not merely hindered but reversed.
The
report highlights the severe crises in Gaza related to water and electricity,
as well as the destruction of vital infrastructure during the military
operations in July and August 2014. For example, Gaza’s 1.8 million inhabitants
rely on coastal aquifers as their main source of freshwater, yet 95 per cent of
this water is not safe to drink.
The
report also estimates the direct losses (excluding people killed) of the three
military operations that took place from 2008 to 2014 to be close to three
times the size of Gaza’s local gross domestic product. However, the total cost
may be substantially higher once indirect economic losses are included and lost
future income streams from destroyed productive capacities are added.
In
addition to the 500,000 people who have been displaced in Gaza as a result of
the most recent military operation, the report estimates significant economic
losses, including the destruction or severe damage of more than 20,000 Palestinian
homes, 148 schools and 15 hospitals and 45 primary health-care centres.
As
many as 247 factories and 300 commercial centres were fully or partially
destroyed. Serious damage was inflicted on Gaza’s sole power plant. The
agricultural sector alone suffered $550 million in losses.
It
is estimated that, even before the military operations in July and August 2014,
Gaza’s electricity supply capacity was not enough to meet 40 per cent of the
demand (2012 figures). The electricity and energy crisis is exacerbated by the
fact that the Palestinian National Authority is not permitted to develop and
use the offshore natural gas fields discovered since the 1990s on Gaza’s
Mediterranean coast.
In
2014, unemployment in Gaza reached 44 per cent, the highest level on record.
Joblessness was particularly severe among young women Palestinian refugees in
Gaza, with more than eight out of 10 women out of work. The economic well-being
of Palestinians living in Gaza is worse today than two decades ago. Per capita
gross domestic product has shrunk by 30 per cent since 1994.
Food
insecurity affects 72 per cent of households, and the number of Palestinian
refugees solely reliant on food distribution from United Nations agencies had
increased from 72,000 in 2000 to 868,000 by May 2015, representing half the
population of Gaza.
The
report maintains that even before the three military operations, the economic
blockade in place since 2007 had already led to the large-scale cessation of
productive operations and loss of employment. Exports from Gaza have been
almost completely blocked, imports and transfers of cash severely restricted
and the flow of all but the most basic humanitarian goods suspended.
The
report warns that donor support remains a necessary but insufficient condition
for Gaza’s recovery and reconstruction. Short of ending the blockade, donor aid
will remain vitally important but will not reverse the ongoing de-development
and impoverishment in Gaza.
UNCTAD
assistance to the Palestinian people
During
the reporting period, UNCTAD continued to work, in cooperation with various
stakeholders and beneficiaries, towards the facilitation of Palestinian trade
and the reintegration of the Palestinian economy with regional economies and
the world. Moreover, UNCTAD continued to conduct policy-oriented studies on
various aspects of Palestinian economic development and to provide training and
advisory services aimed at building Palestinian human and institutional
capacities to facilitate economic development in the Occupied Palestinian
Territory.
In
early 2015, UNCTAD successfully concluded the implementation of a project on
capacity development for facilitating Palestinian trade. The project increased
the awareness of Palestinian shippers and professionals from the private and
public sectors of best practices in trade facilitation, and resulted in savings
in the supply chain.

Gaza (CNN) -- Withdrawing its ground forces from Gaza Tuesday for a three-day cease-fire with Hamas, Israel announced that its central goal was achieved.
"Mission accomplished,"
the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Twitter. "We have dismantled the
underground terror network built by Hamas to infiltrate and attack
Israel." The military said 32 tunnels were destroyed in the four-week
conflict.
The declaration came amid suspicions on both sides over whether the 72-hour humanitarian cease-fire will hold.

group Hamas as a legitimate "political actor" -- while blasting Israel

The scathing column on ForeignPolicy.com was written by Carter and Ireland's former president Mary Robinson.
The article called the current conflict a "humanitarian catastrophe," and while acknowledging Hamas' "indiscriminate targeting" of Israelis, focused its criticism on Israel.
"There is no humane or legal justification for the way the Israeli Defense Forces are conducting this war," they wrote. "Israeli bombs, missiles, and artillery have pulverized large parts of Gaza, including thousands of homes, schools, and hospitals." They said "deliberate attacks on civilians" constitute "war crimes" on both sides, though noting far fewer Israelis have been killed in the fighting. "The international community's initial goal should be the full restoration of the free movement of people and goods to and from Gaza through Israel, Egypt and the sea. Concurrently, the United States and EU should recognize that Hamas is not just a military but also a political force," Carter and Robinson wrote. "Hamas cannot be wished away, nor will it cooperate in its own demise. Israel’s utterly immoral and despicable one-sided devastation of
Gaza, which cannot really even be called a “war” but aggression that is
taking on the dimensions of a pogrom, now includes an attack on Gaza’s power plant.
Other sources of power having been damaged already, this leaves Gaza
without power or largely without power. This directly affects water,
sanitation systems, sewage systems and hospitals, and may lead to deaths
from disease. Palestinians have no escape route from Gaza. Vast numbers
of Palestinians are now displaced refugees in a very small area, and
Israel has caused this result intentionally.
A flimsy rationale has appeared: “Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, an Israeli
military spokesman, did not comment on the explosion at the plant, but
told The Associated Press that Israel’s latest strikes signal ‘a gradual
increase in the pressure’ on Hamas.”
Israel brought on the rocket attacks that it has used as a pretext
for launching a full-scale invasion that is out of all reasonable
proportion to the initial triggering events, the pretext, and the Hamas

The United States issued a firm condemnation of the shelling of a United Nations school in Gaza that killed at least 16 Palestinians on Wednesday, but also confirmed it restocked Israel’s dwindling supplies of ammunition.
The
White House expressed concern that thousands of civilians who had
sought protection from the UN were at risk after the shelling of the
girls’ elementary school. Some 3,300 civilians were taking shelter
there, after being told by Israel to leave their homes.
The UN
agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, which runs the school, said its
initial assessment was that it has been struck by Israeli artillery.
“The
United States condemns the shelling of a UNRWA school in Gaza, which
reportedly killed and injured innocent Palestinians – including children
– and UN humanitarian workers,” said Bernadette Meehan, a spokeswoman
for the White House’s National Security Council.
“We are extremely
concerned that thousands of internally displaced Palestinians who have
been called on by the Israeli military to evacuate their homes are not
safe in UN designated shelters in Gaza.”
Meehan and other US
officials that condemned the attack did not specifically accuse Israel
of responsibility for the shelling, saying there were conflicting
reports about the circumstances of the incident that required further
investigation. They did not specify the nature of those conflicting
reports.
However Washington’s implied condemnation of Israel
marked the strongest language used by the US since the conflict in Gaza
began. The US also strongly criticised the hiding of weapons at UN
facilities in Gaza, although officials acknowledged they did not know if
rockets had been stored at the UNRWA school.
“All of these
actions, and similar ones earlier in the conflict, are inconsistent with
the UN’s neutrality,” Meehan said. “This violence underscores the need
to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible.”
At the same time
however, there was little evidence of Washington using its leverage with
Israel, including record levels of military aid, to apply pressure on
Jerusalem to curtail its offensive.
The Pentagon confirmed a CNN report
that the US had recently provided Israel with a shipment of ammunition.
“The United States is committed to the security of Israel, and it is
vital to US national interests to assist Israel to develop and maintain a
strong and ready self-defense capability,” said Pentagon press
secretary Rear Admiral Kirby. “This defense sale is consistent with
those objectives.”

How far will Netanyahu go? The Hamas party which rules the Gaza strip is now firing rockets into Israel which have reached as far as Tel Aviv. No one has been killed while Israeli airstrikes have already killed up to nearly 100 Palestinians including children, at least one family and even soccer fans who were gathering to watch the World Cup in a local cafe. Thousands of Israeli reserves are being called up and amassed by the Gazan border. Right-wing Israeli politicians like the crazed, nationalist fanatic Avigdor Lieberman are calling for Israel to invade and reconquer Gaza.
The Times Of Israel, Jerusalem Post and Haaretz, key Israeli papers, are confirming that Netanyahu is seriously considering a ground invasion. With Gaza essentially being a caged in guerrilla front, the results of urban conflict would be terrible.
If Netanyahu orders a full invasion of Gaza the results might be as horrific as the 2008 Operation Cast Lead where 1,166 Palestinians including women and children, were killed in a massive barrage during which Israel dropped white phosphorous over the strip. 13 Israelis were killed, 4 by friendly fire. But now the stakes are higher because during that assault which sparked global outrage, Israel was still ruled by a supposedly centre-left coalition. Today the regime of Netanyahu is packed with nationalist, right-wing visionaries determined to annex large portions of the West Bank and reduce Gaza to a simple, isolated ghetto from which the Palestinians might be compelled to just leave, die or disappear.
The people of Gaza have become a punching bag for the Israeli state. The recent kidnapping and murder of three Israeli teens in the West Bank, and the revenge killing by Jewish settlers of a Palestinian teen opened a window for Netanyahu to begin pounding Gaza again. This might be the opportunity Tel Aviv has been waiting for to burn Gaza to the ground and eliminate Hamas and any form of armed resistance from the Palestinians.
The core issue remains the same: Palestinians are being denied a state by an expansionist, colonial power. According to international law they have the right to armed resistance, just as the Jews trapped in the Warsaw Ghetto had the right to resist by force. A people’s civilization is on the line. Would we prefer violence? No. Violence only breeds more hatred, sadness and loss. But there are moments where violence becomes the horrific outgrowth of conditions imposed by the parties involved.
This isn’t about agreeing with Hamas as an ideological party. Joseph Stalin was a brutal dictator, but who wouldn’t acknowledge the right of the Soviet Union and the Red Army to resist the invasion by Nazi Germany? Who would deny the Soviet people’s right to take up arms against the SS?
Consider the words of fascist Israeli politician Ayelet Shaked, a powerful member of the Jewish Home Party. She declared on June 30 that all the Palestinian people are the enemy, going so far as to post on her Facebook page that “They are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their heads,” adding that “Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Otherwise, more little snakes will be raised there.”
Already Israel has killed an entire family through an airstrike. Haaretz reports that the IDF’s response is simply that “it was a mistake.” And now that Israel has bombed most of what could be considered strategic, military targets, Israeli commentator Richard Silverstein reports in his journal Tikun Olam that Israel will now move on to hit “secondary targets,” which means the homes of Hamas or other movement leaders. Their neighbors will of course be part of the carnage.
Yet the U.S. media remains woefully ignorant and blind. ABC News for example, made the idiotic gaffe on Wednesday of displaying footage of destroyed Gazans’s homes and saying they were Israeli neighborhoods hit by Hamas rocket fire.
The situation is similar to a chapter in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic novel “One Hundred Years Of Solitude” where the army is brought in to massacre striking banana workers in the fictional town of Macondo. The day after the massacre the government decrees that there was no massacre, there were no workers, and nothing has ever happened in Macondo. In the same fashion, the Netanyahu government wants you and its supporters to believe that there is no occupation, there is no siege of Gaza, there are no Palestinians.
But the illusion is crumbling, consumed by the flames of this terrible drama. Israel’s most respected novelist, David Grossman, stated at a peace conference hosted by the Israeli paper Haaretz that Israel would eventually face a moment of truth after nearly 50 years of occupying the Palestinian territories. Now that moment is racing towards fruition.
The Israeli masses who only seek what their Palestinian neighbors seek as well, security, jobs, health, decent lives, should rise up against their rulers who are only leading their nation towards desolation, if not immediately physical then socially. When national leaders speak like Shaked, in a language even our own Tea Party radicals would not use (yet), then the state of a nation is in dire crisis. The chalice of violent nationalism is a toxic poison.
Now, more than ever, with technology rendering the world smaller we must begin to develop internationalist mindsets. What is happening now in Gaza connects directly to our campus. Many of our students are from Israel and the Arab world, they have relatives on both sides of the conflict. A Corsair staff member is right now, at this moment, making her first trip to Israel.
The world must rise in a vast, echoing voice against the assault on Gaza. It is in the heat of moments such as this where the embrace of tribalism can be fast and instead of thinking, minds might be lured into cheering on the mighty, militarized state.
The Palestinian people will resist until they have a home, as the Jews fought hard for a homeland, as the South Africans fought hard to end apartheid, as the Algerians fought for independence.
Jews, Arabs, all nations must condemn the Israeli assault on Gaza. Because a people in desperation, whether in Palestine or Africa, Detroit or Brazil, is a scar on the heart of the world.

The core issue remains the same: Palestinians are being denied a state by an expansionist, colonial power. According to international law they have the right to armed resistance, just as the Jews trapped in the Warsaw Ghetto had the right to resist by force. A people’s civilization is on the line. Would we prefer violence? No. Violence only breeds more hatred, sadness and loss. But there are moments where violence becomes the horrific outgrowth of conditions imposed by the parties involved.
This isn’t about agreeing with Hamas as an ideological party. Joseph Stalin was a brutal dictator, but who wouldn’t acknowledge the right of the Soviet Union and the Red Army to resist the invasion by Nazi Germany? Who would deny the Soviet people’s right to take up arms against the SS?
Consider the words of fascist Israeli politician Ayelet Shaked, a powerful member of the Jewish Home Party. She declared on June 30 that all the Palestinian people are the enemy, going so far as to post on her Facebook page that “They are all enemy combatants, and their blood shall be on all their heads,” adding that “Now this also includes the mothers of the martyrs, who send them to hell with flowers and kisses. They should follow their sons, nothing would be more just. They should go, as should the physical homes in which they raised the snakes. Otherwise, more little snakes will be raised there.”
Already Israel has killed an entire family through an airstrike. Haaretz reports that the IDF’s response is simply that “it was a mistake.” And now that Israel has bombed most of what could be considered strategic, military targets, Israeli commentator Richard Silverstein reports in his journal Tikun Olam that Israel will now move on to hit “secondary targets,” which means the homes of Hamas or other movement leaders. Their neighbors will of course be part of the carnage.
Yet the U.S. media remains woefully ignorant and blind. ABC News for example, made the idiotic gaffe on Wednesday of displaying footage of destroyed Gazans’s homes and saying they were Israeli neighborhoods hit by Hamas rocket fire.
The situation is similar to a chapter in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic novel “One Hundred Years Of Solitude” where the army is brought in to massacre striking banana workers in the fictional town of Macondo. The day after the massacre the government decrees that there was no massacre, there were no workers, and nothing has ever happened in Macondo. In the same fashion, the Netanyahu government wants you and its supporters to believe that there is no occupation, there is no siege of Gaza, there are no Palestinians.
But the illusion is crumbling, consumed by the flames of this terrible drama. Israel’s most respected novelist, David Grossman, stated at a peace conference hosted by the Israeli paper Haaretz that Israel would eventually face a moment of truth after nearly 50 years of occupying the Palestinian territories. Now that moment is racing towards fruition.
The Israeli masses who only seek what their Palestinian neighbors seek as well, security, jobs, health, decent lives, should rise up against their rulers who are only leading their nation towards desolation, if not immediately physical then socially. When national leaders speak like Shaked, in a language even our own Tea Party radicals would not use (yet), then the state of a nation is in dire crisis. The chalice of violent nationalism is a toxic poison.
Now, more than ever, with technology rendering the world smaller we must begin to develop internationalist mindsets. What is happening now in Gaza connects directly to our campus. Many of our students are from Israel and the Arab world, they have relatives on both sides of the conflict. A Corsair staff member is right now, at this moment, making her first trip to Israel.
The world must rise in a vast, echoing voice against the assault on Gaza. It is in the heat of moments such as this where the embrace of tribalism can be fast and instead of thinking, minds might be lured into cheering on the mighty, militarized state.
The Palestinian people will resist until they have a home, as the Jews fought hard for a homeland, as the South Africans fought hard to end apartheid, as the Algerians fought for independence.
Jews, Arabs, all nations must condemn the Israeli assault on Gaza. Because a people in desperation, whether in Palestine or Africa, Detroit or Brazil, is a scar on the heart of the world.
How far will Netanyahu go? The Hamas party
which rules the Gaza strip is now firing rockets into Israel which have reached
as far as Tel Aviv. No one has been killed while Israeli airstrikes have
already killed up to nearly 100 Palestinians including children, at least one
family and even soccer fans who were gathering to watch the World Cup in a
local cafe. Thousands of Israeli reserves are being called up and amassed by
the Gazan border. Right-wing Israeli politicians like the crazed, nationalist
fanatic Avigdor Lieberman are calling for Israel to invade and reconquer Gaza.
The Times Of Israel, Jerusalem Post and
Haaretz, key Israeli papers, are confirming that Netanyahu is seriously considering
a ground invasion. With Gaza essentially being a caged in guerrilla front, the
results of urban conflict would be terrible.

A day before Palestinian teenager Muhammad Abu Khudair was kidnapped and burned alive allegedly by six Israeli Jewish youths, Israeli lawmaker Ayelet Shaked published on Facebook a call for genocide of the Palestinians.
It is a call for genocide because it declares that “the entire Palestinian people is the enemy” and justifies its destruction, “including its elderly and its women, its cities and its villages, its property and its infrastructure.”
It is a call for genocide because it calls for the slaughter of Palestinian mothers who give birth to “little snakes.”
If Shaked’s post does not meet the legal definition of a call for genocide then nothing does.
Shaked is a senior figure in the Habeyit Hayehudi (Jewish Home) party that is part of Israel’s ruling coalition.
Her post was shared more than one thousand times and received almost five thousand “Likes.”
Reports claimed that eight members of the same family – including five children – were killed in an air strike on two homes in Khan Younis, south of Gaza.
A spokesman for the Gazan health ministry told Palestinian media that no warning was given and that most of the dead were children. Ashraf al-Qidra said the total number of Palestinians killed over the past three days now stands at 77, with over 500 people injured in the tiny coastal strip. There have been no Israeli casualties from the hundreds of rockets that have been fired by militants in Gaza.
There are also claims that a missile was fired at a cafe in Khan Younis late on Wednesday night, where dozens were gathered to watch the World Cup game between Argentina and Holland – with six dead and 15 injured, according to AFP.
The Israeli defence forces said in a statement that it had targeted hundreds of sites in Gaza and killed three Islamic Jihad militants. "We aimed at 322 targets in Gaza overnight, taking to 750 the total number of Hamas targets hit by the army since the start of Operation Protective Edge," Lt Col Peter Lerner told reporters.
The Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, has refrained from launching a ground offensive on the strip, which was expected after tens of thousands of reserve soldiers were called up earlier this week. But he has defended the IDF's actions in Gaza despite significant civilian casualties.

Thousands expect Israel to play a major role in God’s future plan for earth. What is the Biblical evidence?Many people today consider the restoration of the Jewish nation in Palestine to be a direct and dramatic fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Caldwell, TD Jakes and others who teach and preach about the Rapture, Israel has two dispensations, or time periods, in which they functions as God’s special instrument of salvation. Between these two periods of time comes the dispensation of the “church”. The church received a heavenly reward at the time of the rapture, while Israel received an earthly reward at the end of the tribulation. There is no support in the New Testament for such an erroneous view. The chief reason why the modern state of Israel has no prophetic significance is that after the Jews as a body rejected Jesus as the Messiah, God gave to the Christian church the special privileges, responsibilities, and prerogatives once assigned to the ancient Jews. No longer were the Jews to be His special people with a prophetic destiny. Rom.2:28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; vs.29 but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God. All the promises of a glorious kingdom on earth once given through the Jewish prophets to the Jewish people became void because the Jewish people as a nation did not fulfill the conditions of these prophecies. Failing to receive the glory that could have been Israel’s is probably the saddest story in literature. Placed at the crossroads of the ancient world, God furnished them with every facility for becoming the greatest nation on the earth. God wanted to reward Israel with every physical and spiritual blessing as they put into practice the clear-cut principles that He had graciously taught them through His prophets (Deuteronomy 7, 8, 28). The Old Testament records the sad story of how the vineyard of Israel produced, not the mature fruit of a Christ-like character, but “wild grapes,” a misinterpretation and perversion of what the God of Israel was really like. “What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes?” (Isaiah 5:4 RSV). Even when the Jewish nation was suffering the bitter consequences of disobedience during the Babylonian captivity, God mercifully promised that a restored Israel was possible and that there was yet time to recover its special role as His representative on earth - if it would honor His law and submit to His principles. Even then the Jews could have become, if faithful, the head and not the tail, in matters physical and spiritual; all nations would have looked upon Jerusalem as not only the center of wisdom but also the spiritual capital of the world (see Isaiah 45:14; 60:1 - 11). When the Jews returned to Palestine after the Babylonian captivity, the promises given to Abraham and expanded through the writings of Moses and other prophets would have been fulfilled; the whole earth would have been alerted for the first advent of Christ, even as the way is being prepared for His second coming today. Missed Their Last Opportunity. These Old Testament prophecies that picture Israel dwelling in peace and prosperity, with all nations beating a path to her doors, could have been fulfilled 2000 years ago if they had indeed prepared the world for the first coming of Jesus (see Zechariah 8:14). But instead of fulfilling their greatest assignment they missed their last opportunity, and Jesus their Lord finally had to pronounce with irrevocable judgement: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not Behold your house is forsaken and desolate” (Matthew 23:37, 38 RSV). Those who regard the establishment of the modern state of Israel as a fulfillment of those Old Testament prophecies overlook the fact that these promises were made either prior to their release from Babylonian captivity or during the rebuilding days soon after their return. God would have fulfilled these promises if Israel had been faithful and obedient to the conditions on which the promises were made. Although God promised a “second chance” to Israel after their failure leading up to the Babylonian captivity, He promised no “third chance” to them after their final rejection when their Lord Himself “came to his own home, and his own people received him not” (John 1:11 RSV) But God did not give up, even though Israel as a nation had failed Him. Although corporate Israel no longer was to function as God’s special agent, the individual Jews who received and obeyed Jesus Christ would constitute the new organization through which He would now work. Paul describes this remarkable transition in Romans 9 to 11, where he appeals to individual Jews (such as himself) to respond to God through Jesus, join those Gentiles who have found in Him the solution to their anxious, sinful condition, and together arouse the world to the simple fact that God wants to make an end to sin and its misery by setting up His eternal kingdom composed of those who have found in Jesus the promised Saviour. Those who preach and teach this erroneous Rapture doctrine are purposely misleading multitudes. This doctrine was created by the Jesuits as an anti-reformation and anti-protestant tool to divert attention away from the Catholic and the Pope whom the reformers had identify as the anti-Christ in Revelation.
